The Battle of the Bulge in Luxembourg
The Southern Flank, December 1944 - January 1945
Volume 2: The Americans
Roland Gaul
In October and November 1944, Luxembourg , referred to as the
“Paradise for weary troops” by the Americans, was a relatively
quiet area on the frontline. During this same time, the Germans
were building up forces behind the “Siegfried line” to counterattack
in the West, which was to become the “Battle of the Bulge.” The
German surprise attack started on December 16, 1944 after a
concentrated artillery barrage and to the complete surprise of the
U.S. forces.
Roland Gaul, founder and curator of the Diekirch Historical
Museum in Diekirch, Luxembourg gives a comprehensive look
at the last German offensive in the West from the viewpoint of
American soldiers who defended the German attack. Using
first-hand accounts, he is able to put together a compelling
history of the campaign from initial defeats to complete victory.
