Cpl. Forrest Guth: “E” Co. 506th PIR 101st Airborne Division
Michel De Trez
‘Goody’ Gooth is an original member of the famous ‘Easy’ Company
of the 506th PIR, known as “The Band of Brothers’. Guth joined the
paratroops in 1942 together with his best childhood friends, Shrohl
and Fenstermaker. All three went into ‘Easy’ Company, all three
made it through the war. Guth would be one of the very few original
company members to survive the war without having ever been hit.
Guth chose to disregard orders against taking a camera into combat
and carried Strohl’s 35mm camera to snap pictures in the Normandy
fields. He and his friend Gordon took some of the most outstanding
photographs shot in a combat zone.
With the help of Forrest’s photographs and his recollections it was
possible to retrace this soldier’s footsteps from the early hours of
D-Day, from wear he was misdropped near Utah Beach, to the
location where he reached ‘Easy’ i.e. on the outskirts of Carentan.
